Anti-Ageing - We'll Help Your Skin to Stay Looking Young - Nottingham, Derby, Mansfield & Chesterfield

There are many signs of ageing on the face; fine lines and wrinkles, sun spots, crepey wrinkles on the décolletage, lost volume and sagging jowls, but in the past few years there's been lots of advances in skin care, minimally invasive and non-surgical cosmetic treatments, that work on the problem areas on the face, jaw line, hands and neck.

There are different things that contribute to the ageing of the skin apart from just getting older;
  • Bad nutrition
  • Genetics
  • Stress
  • Sun exposure
We all know the main things we can do to help keep our face and body looking as good as it can possibly be. We can; eat well, exercise, refrain from smoking and drink plenty of water - but we can also:
  • Learn how to manage stress, as too much stress can affect, not only our physical health but also our mental health, and can leave us exhausted. Stress can speed up ageing by giving us frown lines and grey hairs. Try managing the stress in your life with deep breathing, meditation and yoga.
  • Sort out your hair. Grey hair is often one of the first signs of ageing, and more women are discovering grey appearing in their hair as early as their mid twenties. Most women prefer to dye their hair to cover up the grey, but if you decide to try a colour that's different from your original shade, then use colours that will complement your skin tone.
  • The eyebrows define the features of the face. Their shape and arch emphasise our best features and encourage symmetry. The correct eyebrow arch and the distance between the brows can change the way your face looks. Getting perfect eyebrows depends on the dimensions and shape of your face, and getting it right will not only emphasise your eyes, but also make you look younger.

Everyone ages and everyone gets wrinkles, it's something you can't stop from happening, however, to a certain extent we can slow the process down, helping us look younger for longer.

However healthy our lifestyle we can't change the fact, that ageing is a natural process, and we will all get some fine lines, wrinkles and crow’s feet as we grow older. Effective cosmetic treatments can smooth these out with botox. Dermal fillers treatments will also help restore the facial structure and add volume, particularly around the cheeks and lips.

For lots of people, as well as fine lines and wrinkles, skin quality is also a big concern. There are cosmetic treatments which can remove smoker lines around the mouth, reduce sun damage, liver spots, mild acne scars and rejuvenate tired and dull skin. Treatments such as fractional laser, microneedling, and chemical peels help promote the growth of new skin, collagen and elastin, which will thicken the skin, improving resistance to the effects of ageing. They are fast acting and long-lasting, resulting in younger, fresher and smoother looking skin.

Replace Lost Volume and Enhance the Cheeks - Nottingham, Derby, Mansfield & Chesterfield

We tend to lose volume from our face as we get older and the most common place this happens is in the cheeks. The volume goes from the cheeks, causing a flattening of the mid face and this loss of fat can also exaggerate the nasolabial folds. Ageing is a gradual thing, and because we see ourselves in the mirror every day we don't notice all the little changes happening. It's when we look at old photo's and compare the changes, or maybe we notice ageing signs on other people we haven't seen for a while.

As well as wrinkles, with ageing, we also develop sagging and hollows. Our collagen production slows down so the skin is no longer as thick and firm as it was, which can stop us looking our best. A couple of things can cause the face to deflate with age; the structure of the skeleton thins, making the cheekbones recede and get smaller and the medial fat pads thin out and gravity pulls them downwards.

You can do everything right for your body with diet and exercise, but in the long-term, your face might not thank you for it. It's the fat that gives the face its youthful look, and having high cheekbones is a sign of youth and beauty. It seems that being thin is the goal of most people, but when it comes your face, thin can make you look older.

Some people often get called baby-faced, and this usually means they have the smooth, rounder cheeks that we see on babies. Lots of us spend our teens and our twenties trying to lose our facial fat to get defined cheekbones, but by the time we reach our middle-age years, a skinny face can sadly look like an old face. The truth is that round, full faces, tend to look younger.

Facial fat is lost gradually over the years, but a massive weight loss will often show a dramatic change in the face. Dermal filler treatment to enhance the cheeks are an effective treatment that will instantly add volume to your cheeks, giving an instant, more youthful appearance.

Cheek augmentation is a popular treatment choice for those with flattened cheekbones or for those who have volume loss around the cheeks. It's a minimally invasive procedure, is almost painless and needs no downtime, although you may experience slight swelling or potential bruising but you can return to work after your treatment.

Vaser Lipo To Achieve A Smooth Silhouette - Nottingham, Derby, Mansfield & Chesterfield

Sometimes, losing weight is hard, people do everything right but still don't lose the weight. The best way to lose weight is to cut back on what you eat and increase the exercise you do, and to get results, you have to do both. If you're only seeing little, or even no change when trying to lose weight, well, there might be reasons for this.
We sometimes get way too focused on dieting and some studies actually show that those who are constantly dieting, will over time, gain more weight. Instead of measuring food and counting calories, it's more productive to focus on healthy eating, and instead of depriving your body of food you should eat foods that are fresh, low-fat and low sugar, and let weight loss follow as a natural side effect.
If you want to lose weight but you like to drink alcohol on a night out, then it's better to drink spirits together with a diet mixer, as beer, wine and sugary alcoholic drinks are very high in calories. And even if you aren't drinking alcohol, soft drinks and fruit juices can also have high sugar content, and shouldn't be  consumed in large amounts. Your best bet is to drink water as it can have great benefits for weight loss. It's been shown that by drinking water, we can boost the amount of calories burned by 24-30%

Protein is the most important nutrient for losing weight. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and a great chance to load up on proteins. It's said that those who eat a high-protein breakfast aren't as hungry and have fewer cravings throughout the day.
Every meal should include protein, a fat source and low-carb vegetables such as:
  • Meat - chicken, beef, pork, bacon and lamb
  • Fish and seafood - salmon, trout, shrimps, lobster
  • Eggs - omega-3 enriched or pastured eggs
When you're on a diet, you expect to see the scales going down steadily to justify all your hard work, but it doesn't mean that you're not losing weight even if you find that you're experiencing a weight loss plateau. Our body weight tends to fluctuate by a few pounds, it can depend on what sort of food you're eating, and hormones can also cause water retention. To stop getting discouraged, it's better to weigh yourself once a week, and not every day.

Even when eating healthily and exercising, many people have unrealistic expectations of what's achievable, and the reality is, that even with lots of hard work not everyone can look like a supermodel. To streamline any pockets of fat that you just can't lose then a vaser lipo procedure can help. Vaser lipo can carefully target problem areas, including the neck, arms, breasts, abdomen, back, and legs, to remove unwanted fat, enhance body contours, and leave you with a smooth silhouette.

Microdermabrasion Treatment For Clearer Brighter Skin - Nottingham, Derby, Mansfield & Chesterfield

We all want clean, healthy-looking skin and good facial cleansing is so important in achieving this. The face is continually covered throughout the day with dirt, oil, dead cells and pollutants, and removing the build up that's settled on the face, will benefit your skin enormously. Washing your face daily will remove these impurities, leaving your skin with a fresh look.

Regular cleansing of the face will help to keep the skin clean and hydrated. Dehydrated skin can look wrinkled and old and can sometimes feel rough to touch. Cleansing and moisturising will aid the skin to retain water and help your make-up sit better on the skin. Our skin produces natural oil which helps to protect the skin and it reaches the skin's surface through hair follicles. If these follicles get blocked by a build up of dirt, it can cause inflammation, resulting in acne.

Benefits of cleansing the skin:
Regular cleansing will keep your skin looking bright and healthy.
Cleansing will help maintain proper pore size.
Will help your skin cream to work properly.
Make-up will sit better on cleansed skin.
It will encourage proper skin hydration and prevent blocked pores.

A good way to keep your skin looking clean and healthy is microdermabrasion treatment. These facial treatments are a non-chemical, non-invasive procedure that uses a spray of microcrystals to remove the outermost layer of your skin. By removing the dry, dead skin cells, it'll not only reveal a younger, healthier-looking skin, but it will also encourage new skin cell production, which have higher levels of collagen and elastin, which will further improve your skin’s appearance.

Microdermabrasion stimulates the blood flow, improving cell production, which improves the skin’s elasticity and texture. There's no downtime, although after your treatment it's recommended that you wear sunscreen, as the skin will be more sensitive to sunlight.

Microdermabrasion can:
Treat blotchy, uneven skin tones
Brighten dull, lifeless, tired skin
Lessen your fine lines and wrinkles
Unclog pores and blemishes
Reduce acne scarring and the scars that acne causes
Improve sun damaged skin and age spots
Treat blackheads and white heads

Depending on the skin's condition, the area you're having treated and your desired result, an average microdermabrasion treatment will take less than an hour to complete. Straight after the first treatment, you will see improvements in the texture of the skin. You'll notice that skin care products will sink more easily into the skin and make-up will sit on the skin more smoothly, after the removal of the dead skin cells.

Vaser Lipo For All Parts Of The Body - Nottingham, Derby, Mansfield & Chesterfield

Losing weight just seems to get harder as we get older. Many people accumulate excess fat in specific areas and they can find it difficult to target these problem areas with just diet and exercise alone. After having children, a lot of women find they get new problem areas, where fat settles on the tummy, hips and bottom, men and women find themselves saddled with middle-aged spread, bingo wings flap about on the upper arms, back fat bulges out from under the bra and some men acquire man boobs.
Another way to get rid of these unsightly bulges and keep up a slim, healthy-looking body, is by having a vaser lipo procedure. At Selston Cosmetic Clinic, clients who come to us have different body types, body problem areas and goals.

The most common body areas for vaser lipo are;
Waist - Love handles, on both men and women, can prove very hard to get rid of, but with vaser, the good skin elasticity in the waist area can get excellent results with this treatment.
Hips - Below the waist and toward the outer area of the bottom is, in lots of women a problem area. The hips can gradually merge into the waist area and vaser treatment can shape this area to create a curvy feminine silhouette.
Flanks - The flanks also have good skin elasticity. The flank area is in the lower back area above the pant line. Flank treatment is usually done at the same time as the waist, giving an even and smooth contour.
Chest - Men tend to lose muscle mass of the chest as they age, resulting in a flabby appearance. Other men suffer from moderate to severe gynecomastia, or man boobs, both can easily be treated with vaser lipo.
Upper arms - Excess fat and tissue in the upper arms is a common sign of getting older. Vaser can give a more youthful look, toning the arm area.
Lower abdomen - Vaser of the lower abs can result in a tighter and more toned tummy.
Upper abdomen - The upper abdomen is the area between the tummy button and the ribs.
Inner thighs - Some women want vaser of the inner thigh to stop their inner thighs from touching when they're standing up straight.
Outer thighs - Usually known as saddle bags, the outer thigh is a common problem area for lots of women.
Back - Known as back fat, bra fat or fat rolls. The back is a great area for vaser lipo as the skin in the area is thick and forgiving.
Chin / Knees / Neck - Delicate areas can benefit from precise vaser treatment.
Compared to traditional liposuction;
  • Vaser lipo causes minimal damage to the body, the vaser probes avoid the nerves, blood vessels and surrounding tissue.
  • There's much less bruising and swelling.
  • The results are immediate, and they are further enhanced over the following months.
  • With vaser, there's 70 per cent less blood loss compared to normal liposuction.
  • Vaser treatment takes place under a local anaesthetic, avoiding any potential complications.
  • Vaser lipo produces more skin tightening than any other form of liposuction.
  • Large, small or multiple areas, can easily be targeted during one vaser lipo procedure.
  • Fat cells close to the skin’s surface can easily be targeted with vaser, producing excellent results in the delicate areas such as the neck, chin and the back of the knees.

As long as you are eating healthy and exercising regularly, a vaser lipo procedure will help you take away the unwanted fat in your problem areas.

Dermal Filler to Treat Dark Circles, Eye Bags & Tear Troughs - Nottingham, Derby, Mansfield & Chesterfield

It's the eyes that first catch another person’s attention, and this can concern a lot of men and women if they have sunken eyes, dark circles or bags under the eyes. Your eyes can tell a lot about you; your age, emotion, or your health.

Dermal filler to correct dark circles and tear troughs
  • Loss of volume around the eye area exposes the orbital bone, resulting in a hollowed appearance beneath the eyes
  • Changes in the skin's colour or pigmentation are common among those of African or Asian descent causing dark circles under the eyes
  • Eye bags and dark circles can also be genetic, and there's a high chance that you could develop it as well if, some of your family have them too
  • Sun exposure can produce excess melanin which can also contribute to the darkening around the eye area
  • Dark under eye circles can also be caused by allergic reactions.
  • A hectic social life, with late night outs, excess alcohol or smoking, can all temporarily darken the eye area
As we grow older we notice certain changes, and one that is commonly commented on, is the dark circles under the lower eyelids which can make you look tired and older than you really are, and it only gets worse as time goes on. The skin loses some of its volume and elasticity and the decrease of collagen production and elastin causes it to becomes thinner, and the loss of fatty tissues can cause a hollow or sunken appearance. The skin around the eyes is very thin and as we age it has a tendency to develop dark circles, eye bags and under eye hollows. The eye bag or tear trough is the groove between the lower eyelid and the cheek, caused by a loss of volume around eye area which exposes the orbital bone.

if
Dermal filler treatment for tear troughs

If you're looking for a quick fix, then make-up is the easiest option, helping to camouflage the areas that give you concern. Concealer, foundation and tinted moisturisers can help to cover up any dark areas and shadows temporarily, but they won't remedy the problem. Injectable treatments can improve sunken eyes and under eye circles, using dermal fillers.

Dermal fillers will help to visibly reduce the fine lines and creases around the eyes. With sunken eyes, dermal filler not only fills in that hollow area, but it also helps to increase collagen production. At Selston Cosmetic Clinic all the dermal fillers used are non-animal based, and are extremely safe. The filler gets injected into the deeper layers of skin, and over the following weeks will cause rehydration of the skin and underlying tissues, improving and rejuvenating your face.

Refresh Your Face With Botox - Nottingham, Derby, Mansfield & Chesterfield

It's inevitable that as we get older, the more we will notice fine lines and wrinkles starting to appear on our face, starting with crows feet at the eye area and gradually spreading to the rest of the face. Botox is a safe, simple and gentle treatment which can treat lots of areas, depending on the way your facial expression muscles work. A fully trained, experienced practitioner should always carry out these treatments, as the face is a delicate area to work on.
Botox brow lift before and after
Areas affected by expressive and static lines:
  • Frown lines - we might find that over time, deep lines between the eyebrows and above the nose become quite prominent. Frown lines can appear as two deep furrows that sit between the eyebrows and they are sometimes called the number 11's. To stop you overworking this area, botox injections can relax the muscle, which will also help to reduce the static groove.
  • Forehead - we tend to get both expressive and static lines forming horizontally across our forehead. These wrinkles can dramatically age your appearance, but the use of botox will relax the lines, and stop the area from over-expressing.
  • Eyes - crows feet at the corner of the eyes are a big concern for lots of people. The eyes are one of the most obvious areas for showing age, and with it being a delicate area you should always choose an experienced, highly skilled practitioner to treat them. The eyes are one of the most commonly requested areas for botox treatment.
  • Bunny Lines - these are the straight, slightly diagonal lines on both sides of the nose, under the bridge, that appear when we smile or laugh. They become obvious when we scrunch up our nose when laughing, or through the natural process of ageing.
  • Brow - we have muscles in the face that pull down the eyebrows and muscles that lift up the eyebrows. Injecting botox into the muscles that pull downwards is an ideal way to lift the brow area as it relaxes the muscles that we use to frown, and this lifts the weight that we naturally want to push down.
  • Jaw line - botox can relax and shrink the enlarged masseter muscle on the jaw line near the ear. Botox injections can streamline the area, giving a smooth, heart-shaped jaw line, softening the contour of your lower facial area.
Botox on crows feet before and after

The botox itself stays where it's injected, it doesn’t travel anywhere else in the body, and it gradually wears off naturally, after 3-6 months. The key to successful botox is subtlety; enhancing your face with careful and well thought out treatment, striving to give your face a refreshed, rejuvenated appearance, and avoiding a frozen or startled look.

Radio Frequency Treatment to Tighten Loose Sagging Skin - Nottingham, Derby, Mansfield & Chesterfield

Our skin becomes thinner as we age, and we can lose that firm, toned look that keeps us looking youthful. Skin tightening treatments are ideal for those who are showing signs of ageing; like wrinkles or loose, sagging skin, and if you want a non-surgical, safe and effective way to rejuvenate your face, then this is the ideal treatment.
Accent radio frequency is a revolutionary treatment that uses advanced radio frequency technology to treat your lines and wrinkles, while remaining non-invasive. Accent is highly effective in tightening loose skin, promoting healthy collagen production and improving body shape.

Accent radio frequency is a treatment that addresses face and body areas that are in need of skin tightening and cellulite reduction. An improvement in cellulite and fat reduction can sometimes be seen after the first session, but most people will see a significant improvement after several sessions. For those who are looking for improvement without using any needles or incisions, this treatment is the one for you. Accent can either be used as a stand alone treatment or combined with other treatments to enhance results.
Radio frequency treatment provides pleasing results by:
  • Tightening up fine lines and wrinkles on the face
  • Reducing sagging jowls
  • Firming up the loose and lax skin of the neck
  • Improving cellulite and stretch marks
  • Arm tightening (aka Bingo Wings)
Radio frequency is an energy that causes heating by using radio waves, and it's this heating that causes the fat cells to disrupt and the skin to tighten. The heating of the skin to a certain temperature means you will improve collagen formation, increase the blood flow and circulation and that will strengthen the tissue and improve the texture. Collagen reduces as we age, but the good news is we can rebuild it, so the more sessions you have, the better the result. The treatment has sometimes been compared to a hot massage, that's given with minimal discomfort.

You will need to play an active part in your treatment to gain, and keep up your results. Dehydration is one of the things that ages us, so you will need to drink a lot of water. At the time of treatment you should make sure that you're hydrated, because of the interaction between radio frequency and the water molecules in the tissue, and exercise and diet control will always enhance your result.
The accent treatment is a comfortable way to tone, tighten and smooth your skin, giving you a rejuvenated youthful firmness of the skin.

Treat the Facial Redness of Rosacea with Laser - Nottingham, Derby, Mansfield & Chesterfield

Rosacea is a chronic condition that affects the face, causing persistent redness and episodic flushing, initially starting with a tendency to blush easily. The condition causes dilated capillaries, resulting in general redness and well-defined blood vessels. The blood vessels covering these areas enlarge and dilate, producing facial thread veins, also called telangiectasia. Pimples can also occur on the face in rosacea, which resemble teenage acne, known as acne rosacea.

Symptoms often begins with flushing but other symptoms might be:
  • Burning and stinging sensations
  • Permanent redness
  • Pimples (papules and pustules)
  • Appearance of small blood vessels on the skin
Rosacea usually begins at any age over 30 and it shows as redness across the cheeks, nose, chin or forehead, tending to happen more often in women but be more severe in men. The face can embarrassingly become bright red and can cause the facial skin to feel sensitive, and can also burn or sting.
  1. Cleanse your face gently before applying your make-up. Find a cleanser that's best suited to your skin type, avoiding products with harsh chemicals. Try to choose only natural-based products that won't make any flare ups worse. After cleansing, gently pat your face dry with a soft towel, without rubbing your face too harshly.
  2. The fewer ingredients in your moisturiser the better and definitely fragrance free. Ultimately, you simply need a moisturiser that's gentle, rehydrates your skin and stops it from drying out.
  3. A primer will help your make-up sit nicely on your skin. A green-tinted primer, used only on the affected areas, can hide the redness before you apply your foundation.
  4. A good mineral-based foundation usually has fewer unwanted ingredients and will offer good coverage on your skin. Oil-based products might not hide the redness on your skin as effectively.
  5. When you apply your foundation, to avoid irritating your skin you should apply it with a make-up brush and not with your fingers. It's important that you clean your brushes after every use, especially when you suffer from a skin condition, such as rosacea, that's prone to flare-ups.
  6. You should choose your make-up carefully, as vibrant red lipsticks and bright eyeshadow will only magnify any remaining redness.

At Selston Cosmetic Clinic, we provide a state of the art laser treatment, giving effective therapy for this upsetting condition. With the use of laser energies and expert technique, we are obtaining excellent results, not only in the cosmetic appearance but also a marked reduction in the upsetting flushing attacks of rosacea
Our advanced laser system has a cooled sapphire window on the tip of the laser scope to further protect and cool the skin. Laser treatment causes only minimal discomfort, although some may experience a minor stinging sensation on the skin as we deliver the laser pulses. We can offer topical anaesthetic cream to make treatments as comfortable as possible.

Botox, Microdermabrasion & Chemical Peels For Fabulous Skin - Nottingham, Derby, Mansfield & Chesterfield

Now that summer has waved farewell and the nights are drawing in, it's time to pack away the summer clothes, bring out the woolly jumpers, and turn up the central heating. Although, it's not just about changing your wardrobe and warming up your home, it's time to think about how we can look after our skin through the long, colder months ahead.
There are many things which affect our skin, from colder weather, taking hot baths and central heating, to eating comforting foods that are probably not be as healthy as they might be. Colder air temperatures are drier, and this tends to take the moisture from the skin, sapping the skin of its natural oils, causing dryness and flaking which can make any existing conditions like dry skin or eczema even worse.
It's easy to get a bit slack with our skin care routine when the days are cold and it starts to get dark really early. We tend to prefer mostly staying indoors in the evenings, warm and snug, watching movies and eating treats. In the summer we cleansed, toned, exfoliated and cared for our facial skin but come winter, we make do with washing our face while in the shower or taking off our make up with a wet wipe. All the dedicated skin regimes from the summer seem not to matter as much in winter, and this results in our faces looking dull and lack-lustre.
But in the colder months we should really take more care of our skin, as we are more likely to experience our skin cracking and flaking, we'll notice roughness and redness, or maybe even start to see deeper, more noticeable fine lines and wrinkles appearing on our face. However these are all common skin care problems that we get in the cold weather, and we can still easily maintain a glowing, hydrated skin right through the coldest winter months.
Microdermabrasion treatment

  • For skin blocked up by dead cells, using a hydrating cleanser, toner and moisturiser can help. Cosmetic treatments such as microdermabrasion are also a great way to dislodge dead and dull cells from the top layer of the skin, resulting in a polished smooth and glowing skin.
  • Your mouth suffers terribly with the cold. Chapped, flaky lips not only look unsightly, but the uneven surface makes it nearly impossible to achieve a smooth lipstick application. Slather on a good lip balm during the day, every day, to keep them hydrated, locking the moisture in.
Chemical peel treatment

  • If you don’t exfoliate regularly, then now is the time to begin, and you should start by increasing your exfoliation routine to two or three times a week. Gentle exfoliation can help to remove dead cells, allowing fresh cells to reach the surface more easily. Try not to use a scrub that is too abrasive, as winter skin is often sensitive and a harsh scrub will likely cause skin irritation. The surface texture of your skin can easily be restored through exfoliation, as the treatment promotes new skin-cell turnover allowing your face to look its best. Alternatively, a chemical peel treatment will improve the skin's texture and tone, while promoting the growth of new skin.
  • Don't forget your hands, feet, elbows or knees. Thick socks and gloves can only offer so much protection, but our hands and feet are vulnerable, growing drier and rougher in the cold weather. At night, applying intensive moisturising cream to the feet and then putting on socks, will help the cream penetrate the skin. Applying hand cream throughout the day will stop the hands getting dry and chapped. After showering, when you lotion your body make sure you don't forget your elbows and knees. Stop them getting rough and scaly by using an intensive body cream.
Botox treatment
  • The cold, windy weather outdoors and the heat from indoors can damage the skin, causing dryness, redness, irritation and even wrinkles. Botox treatment can dramatically soften facial expression lines and wrinkles, which will leave you looking younger. Botox injections will block nerve transmission which temporarily reduces the contractions of the facial muscles that cause wrinkles and frown lines.
